Happy Birthday!

Today the Temple of Cartoon Mojo is one year old! It's been an amazing success and it couldn't have been done without the effort, support, and fun our students in SEQA-ATL bring to this department. 2008 set a great example of what we can be. In the past year we've had 29 Sketch Challenges, 7 Event Reports, a slew of student work to share, and more bringing us 12,919 hits from countries across the world! (That's about 35 hits a day for anyone counting.) And to celebrate we had a blog header challenge. Everyone's entry looked great! But we've revamped the look of the blog with Pat Bollin's submission. It's a great theme with a master and students all wielding tools of our trade in a Shaolin temple. It will grace the blog for 2009. Congratulations to him and all who made the Temple of Cartoon Mojo everything it is today!

Shawn Crystal does Deadpool

It's been official for awhile but for those of you that don't know our very own Professor Shawn Crystal is penciling and inking the upcoming Deadpool Annual! Congratulations, Shawn! He's busting out some amazing pages while teaching full-time. That's two full-time jobs at the same time... and he's kicking ass at both! If that doesn't set an example for the rest of us I don't know what would. If you see him make sure you congratulate him and pick up your copy of the annual when it's released. Shawn is working with Mike Benson, producer for HBO's Entourage, and IGN just interviewed them about working on Deadpool. Check out the full interview here (complete with SCAD-ATL drop). The interview contains lots of art, some of which I've posted below to show his process from thumbs to inks. The color is being done by Lee Loughridge, SCAD alumni. Can't wait to see the book, Shawn. Fantastic work!

Earlybird Sketch Challenge

The brave souls who went to Temple last Friday even though it wasn't technically meeting were unanimous in their choice for an earlybird sketch challenge, ostensibly based on some work by Temple member Hung Le:

Hamsters dressed as Star Wars characters.

Get your Star Wars hamsters in before Friday, when the first legitimate sketch challenge of the semester begins - and don't forget to vote on what it'll be!

Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artists screening

The Atlanta Jewish Film Festival will be screening Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist on Monday, Jan. 19th at 4:40pm. There do not seem to be many copies of this documentary floating around, so do yourself a favor and see it while you can! One show only.

Get tickets and directions :

Also, this is now available to buy on DVD!

Sketch Challenges Voting Begins

This Friday we will start up the sketch challenges again! The voting worked really well last quarter so we're going to stick with it. You'll find your options for the first sketch challenge of Winter quarter in the left column. Place your vote now!

Until then, the Header Challenge is still open but will conclude this Friday so make sure you email Nolan your submissions. We'll post the submissions and vote on whose header gets to grace this blog for the next year!
